Write It Out – The Therapeutic Magic of Expressive Writing
By Danny Pettry II, M.Ed., M.S., LPC, NCC, CTRS-BHS
Definition:
Expressive writing involves writing about thoughts and feelings related to stressful or traumatic experiences. Unlike journaling, it emphasizes emotional disclosure rather than daily recounting.
Benefits:
Reduces stress and anxiety
Improves mood and immune functioning
Helps organize thoughts and make meaning of experiences
Case Study Example:
A college student experiencing anxiety wrote daily for 15 minutes about his worries and underlying fears. Over time, he reported a clearer mind and reduced tension.
Three Easy Interventions:
Prompt clients to write about a turning point in their lives.
Offer sentence starters like “I feel most alive when…”
Encourage letter-writing to someone they need closure with (not necessarily to send).
