Every recreational therapist knows what they do—provide therapeutic activities. Many can explain how they do it—with assessments, plans, interventions, and evaluations. But have you ever stopped to ask yourself… why?
In his powerful book Start With Why, Simon Sinek says:
“People don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it.”
So let’s ask: Why do we choose recreational therapy?
Because we believe in people.
Because we know leisure is more than play—it’s a path to healing.
Because we’ve seen what happens when someone laughs, connects, or moves for the first time in weeks.
Because we want to help others reclaim joy, purpose, and identity.
Our why is rooted in compassion, empowerment, and transformation.
We’re not just filling time—we’re changing lives.
Recreational therapy isn’t just a job. It’s a calling. And that purpose is what keeps us going on the hard days. It’s what inspires creativity, fuels resilience, and brings meaning to our work.
So the next time someone asks what you do, tell them proudly. But don’t stop there. Tell them why.
