What Recreational Therapists Need to Know to Provide Services for Pediatric Patients

by | Jun 27, 2025 | Uncategorized | 0 comments

By Danny W. Pettry II, M.Ed., LPC, NCC, CTRS-BHS

Working with children in recreational therapy requires a blend of creativity, patience, developmental knowledge, and heart. Pediatric patients—typically ranging from infancy to age 12—have unique physical, cognitive, emotional, and social needs that shape how we approach therapy.

Key Considerations for Pediatric RT Services:

1. Understand Developmental Stages
Pediatric clients are constantly growing and changing. Tailor interventions to match developmental milestones—using age-appropriate activities that promote motor skills, communication, imagination, and social interaction.

2. Make Play the Foundation
Play is the natural language of children. Use games, art, music, sensory activities, and pretend play to build trust, teach coping skills, and promote emotional expression. Play can be both therapeutic and diagnostic.

3. Prioritize Safety and Structure
Young children thrive with routines and clear expectations. Set predictable boundaries while allowing flexibility within the session. Always maintain physical and emotional safety, especially when working with children who have trauma histories or medical conditions.

4. Involve Families
Pediatric therapy is often most effective when families are part of the process. Educate parents or guardians about leisure skills and ways to reinforce goals at home.

5. Adapt for Ability
Pediatric clients may have developmental delays, disabilities, or medical conditions. Be prepared to modify activities using adaptive equipment, visual supports, or step-by-step instructions.

Final Thoughts

Working with children is a rewarding and joyful part of recreational therapy—but it also requires specialized training and intentional, playful strategies. When we meet kids where they are developmentally, we help build a foundation for lifelong well-being.

“Do It Right the First Time” Is Terrible Advice

By Danny W. Pettry II, M.Ed. M.S., LPC, NCC, CTRS-BH I remember hearing teachers give this advice: “Do it right the first time, and you won’t have to do it again.” It sounds like good advice. And sometimes it is. If I’m completing a task I already know how to do,...
