I know firsthand how challenging burnout can be. In my facility, we’ve had times when we were short-staffed, and the demands seemed never-ending. I’ve felt the weight of trying to cover too much, and I know many other rec therapists have been there too.
Burnout isn’t just about feeling tired. It’s about losing that spark, the passion that brought you to this field in the first place. The danger is real — if we don’t protect our well-being, it’s easy to drift from compassion into exhaustion.
Recreational therapy is a heart-centered profession. We give so much to others, but we can’t forget that our own well-being matters too. Preventing burnout means setting boundaries, practicing self-care, seeking peer support, and making time to recharge. When we do this, not only do we protect ourselves, but we ensure our clients receive the best version of us.
Because at the end of the day, your energy is the tool that helps people heal — and keeping it strong is vital.
