As recreational therapists, we dedicate our careers to enhancing the quality of life for individuals through purposeful recreation and therapeutic activities. However, one crucial aspect of our profession often overlooked is the strength and influence of our national association, the American Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA).
Advocacy for Our Profession
Why should every recreational therapist consider becoming a member of ATRA? The answer lies in the power of collective advocacy. When only 5% of our professionals participate in the association, the financial resources for advocacy can only go so far. With limited funding, our ability to influence policy changes, improve standards of practice, and elevate the profile of recreational therapy is significantly hampered.
Imagine the potential impact if 100% of recreational therapists were ATRA members. Our combined membership dues would significantly strengthen the association’s ability to advocate for our profession, ensuring that our voices are heard at the local, state, and national levels. More funds mean more resources for lobbying efforts, educational initiatives, and professional development opportunities that benefit all of us.
A Call to Action
Reflecting on the words of President John F. Kennedy, “Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country.” We must take this to heart and consider how we can support not just ourselves, but our entire profession. When we join ATRA, we are not merely signing up for a membership; we are actively participating in a movement to shape the future of recreational therapy.
Join the Movement
As a lifetime member of ATRA since 1999, I have witnessed firsthand the positive impact that a strong membership can have on our field. My journey as a recreational therapist has been enriched by the resources and community that ATRA provides. I encourage you, whether you are a seasoned professional or just starting, to consider how your involvement can make a difference.
The strength of recreational therapy lies not only in what we do but in the unity of our profession. By joining ATRA, we can ensure that our collective voice advocates for the recognition and respect we deserve.
In conclusion, let’s come together to demonstrate the vitality of our profession. Join ATRA today and be a part of the change we want to see in recreational therapy. Together, we can build a brighter future for ourselves and the individuals we serve.
