Insight # 3 – March 2026
Each month, I share one practical insight to strengthen your recreational therapy practice.
In recreational therapy, progress rarely happens in dramatic leaps. It happens in small, consistent steps.
A growth mindset means believing that abilities, coping skills, emotional regulation, and resilience can be developed through effort, practice, and support. When we approach our work with this mindset, we stop asking, “Can they do this?” and start asking, “What support will help them grow into this?”
For clients, a growth mindset sounds like:
-
“I’m not good at this yet.”
-
“I can practice.”
-
“I’m learning.”
For recreational therapists, it sounds like:
-
“This didn’t work — what can I adjust?”
-
“What strength can I build from here?”
-
“How can this activity stretch their capacity safely?”
The key is modeling it.
When we respond to setbacks with curiosity instead of frustration, we teach resilience. When we reinforce effort over outcome, we build confidence. When we design activities that are challenging but achievable, we create conditions for growth.
Growth mindset is not about toxic positivity. It is about realistic optimism — believing that change is possible with structure, intention, and repetition.
Small growth compounds.
And that’s how real progress happens.
