Revitalize and Flourish: Rediscovering the Power of Leisure Time for Recreational Therapists

by | Dec 21, 2023 | Featured, Uncategorized | 0 comments

Hey there, recreational therapist friend —

In the hustle and bustle of our rewarding yet demanding profession, it’s easy to overlook the importance of taking some well-deserved time off.

We talk a lot about self-care in our line of work, but sometimes we forget to take our own advice.

Let’s delve into the critical role of leisure time and recharging, and how it ultimately benefits both ourselves and those we serve.

Burnout is a real issue in the field of recreational therapy. The emotional and mental energy we invest in our clients can sometimes lead to exhaustion and a sense of disillusionment. It’s essential for us to recognize the signs of burnout within ourselves and proactively address them.

Taking time off isn’t just a luxury – it’s a necessity for maintaining our passion and effectiveness in our roles.

In our profession, we have a deep understanding of the healing power of leisure activities. We witness firsthand how engaging in enjoyable, stress-relieving pastimes can improve mental health and overall well-being. However, we often forget that we need to apply these principles to our own lives. We have a unique insight into the positive impact of relaxation and recreation, and it’s time we prioritize implementing these practices for our own benefit.

The significance of leisure time extends beyond simply preventing burnout. It’s about fostering creativity, gaining new perspectives, and nurturing personal growth. When we step away from our work, we create space for inspiration to blossom and for our minds to rejuvenate. This renewal directly contributes to our ability to offer innovative and effective therapeutic experiences for our clients.

So, dear recreational therapist, let’s remember that taking time off isn’t selfish – it’s an essential investment in our own well-being and our capacity to empower others. Whether it’s spending a quiet day in nature, embracing a new hobby, or simply relaxing with loved ones, let’s prioritize our leisure time and return to our work refreshed, renewed, and ready to continue making a positive impact.

“Do It Right the First Time” Is Terrible Advice

By Danny W. Pettry II, M.Ed. M.S., LPC, NCC, CTRS-BH I remember hearing teachers give this advice: “Do it right the first time, and you won’t have to do it again.” It sounds like good advice. And sometimes it is. If I’m completing a task I already know how to do,...
