Recreational therapists are uniquely positioned to help clients in recovery from substance use by teaching leisure skills that replace unhealthy coping patterns. Relapse prevention includes helping clients discover safe, meaningful alternatives like exercise, art, volunteering, or outdoor activities. Leisure education also helps clients identify triggers and practice healthy routines. Recreation becomes a tool not only for filling free time but also for building identity and purpose outside of substance use.
