Rec Therapists Share Their Favorite Parks and Outdoor Activities

In July, we asked recreational therapists across the country two simple yet inspiring questions:

  1. What is your favorite park?

  2. What do you love to do at parks?

Your responses were incredible—ranging from national treasures to local gems, and from serene strolls to adventurous climbs. Here’s what we discovered:

🌲 Top Favorite Parks

Recreational therapists love to explore the great outdoors! Here are some of the most frequently mentioned parks:

  • Yellowstone National Park – A clear favorite!

  • Great Smoky Mountains National Park

  • Zion, Bryce Canyon, Grand Canyon – The “Mighty Five” in Utah made a strong showing.

  • Glacier National Park

  • Yosemite National Park

  • Acadia National Park (Maine)

  • Sleeping Bear Dunes (Michigan)

  • Lake James State Park (NC)

  • Watoga State Park (WV)

  • Central Park (NYC)

Many therapists also mentioned local, state, and provincial parks, emphasizing that every park offers its own beauty—from scenic overlooks to quiet picnic spots.

🚶‍♀️ Favorite Activities at Parks

When it comes to how recreational therapists enjoy parks, one word sums it up: hiking! But that’s not all. Here’s a breakdown of your favorite ways to spend time outdoors:

  • Hiking, walking, and exploring

  • Camping and sitting by the fire

  • Swimming, kayaking, and paddle boarding

  • Photography and nature observation

  • Relaxing, picnicking, and people watching

  • Fishing and bird watching

  • Geocaching and snowshoeing

  • Spending time with family and pets

  • Sightseeing and looking for waterfalls

  • Playing, journaling, meditating, and even Pokémon Go!

The common thread? Connection with nature, peace of mind, and shared experiences with others.

🌟 Final Thoughts

Whether you’re hiking through the canyons, sitting quietly near a lake, or playing frisbee at a local park, the outdoors clearly plays a powerful role in the lives of recreational therapists. Nature is not just a backdrop—it’s a source of restoration, inspiration, and play.

We’re so grateful to all who shared their responses. Your love for parks and nature truly reflects the heart of recreational therapy.
