Radical Acceptance (for things we cannot control)

by | May 20, 2021 | Uncategorized | 0 comments

By Danny W. Pettry II, M.Ed., M.S., LPC, NCC, CTRS-BHS

The Truth: We can’t control a lot of things that happen in our lives.

We have no power over:

  • Weather
  • Furloughed
  • Our aging bodies
  • Natural disasters
  • Dumped, divorced
  • Changes in technology
  • The past choices we made
  • Rather someone likes us or not
  • If other people are rude and mean to us
  • If our favorite coffee shop goes out of business
  • Who the majority of people vote for and elect to office
  • Rather a person will go on a date or decide not to go on a date
  • If a person decides to hang up the phone on us or block us on social media.

Fighting the reality of the situation causes additional pain and suffering.

Radical acceptance is a term used to acknowledge the reality of a situation.

It is what it is.

  • There is no more denial.
  • We might not like or enjoy it.
  • However, we embrace that it’s real.
  • Fighting reality causes unneeded pain and suffering.

Doing it the radical acceptance way: It’s raining. Yes. It is raining.

Danny Pettry disclosure: For the record. I often enjoy rainy days. I love to hear rain while sleeping. I enjoy sitting on the porch, drinking coffee and listening to the rain. I love the smell of the rain. Of course – I wouldn’t’ want rain all the time.

“Do It Right the First Time” Is Terrible Advice

By Danny W. Pettry II, M.Ed. M.S., LPC, NCC, CTRS-BH I remember hearing teachers give this advice: “Do it right the first time, and you won’t have to do it again.” It sounds like good advice. And sometimes it is. If I’m completing a task I already know how to do,...
