Puttering: Jeff Bezos’s Secret — and Validation for Rec Therapists

Stillman, J. (2025, November 3). Jeff Bezos’s secret to a clear, focused mind is puttering. Psychology says he’s on to something. Inc.com. https://www.inc.com/jessica-stillman/jeff-bezos-secret-to-a-clear-focused-mind-is-puttering-psychology-says-hes-on-to-something/

I recently came across an article about Jeff Bezos and his morning routine. Before work, he spends time puttering—reading the paper, drinking coffee, chatting with family, and easing into the day.

When I read that, I immediately thought about what we do in recreational therapy. Puttering is basically leisure in motion—simple, mindful, everyday activity that helps clear the mind and lower stress. Bezo’s puttering really validates what we do in recreational therapy.

What Is “Puttering”?

It means doing small, low-pressure tasks at a relaxed pace—without a set goal or deadline. Think:

  • Making breakfast slowly

  • Watering plants

  • Folding laundry

  • Drinking coffee while daydreaming

It’s not wasted time—it’s recovery time for the brain.

It’s not about, Puttering, — It’s about the Benefits of Puttering

Psychology research (and Bezos’s example) shows that taking time to putter can:
✅ Calm anxiety and reduce tension
✅ Improve focus and creativity
✅ Boost mood and energy
✅ Help with problem-solving later in the day

Why It Matters for Recreation Therapists

As rec therapists, we teach people the value of balance, leisure, and slowing down. Puttering fits right in:

  • It’s a simple mindfulness skill clients can practice at home.

  • It models healthy leisure and self-care for us, too.

  • It reminds us that “doing nothing fast” can still be meaningful and therapeutic.

Try This

🕐 Take 10–15 minutes each morning to putter before checking your phone.
🌿 Invite clients to try small, slow-paced activities between sessions.
💬 Ask: “What’s one calming thing you like to do with no pressure?”

Sometimes healing begins in the quiet moments—just like puttering.
