Inspired by Pat Flynn’s Unstuck Newsletter (Issue #167, November 4, 2025)
In a world that’s becoming more filtered, edited, and artificial every day, Pat Flynn (2025) reminds us that what people crave most is authenticity. In his Unstuck newsletter, he encourages us to “create a real, unfiltered experience” — whether it’s through a live meetup, a candid video, or simply showing up as our true selves.
That message hits home for those of us in recreational therapy. Rec therapy is real. It’s face-to-face, hands-on, and rooted in genuine connection. You can’t automate empathy, and you can’t fake the magic that happens when people come together to play, create, and grow.
🌿 Real Connection, Real Healing
Pat Flynn wrote about how Generation Alpha is moving away from constant screens and seeking out real-life experiences again — the kind that can’t be faked or filtered. That’s exactly what recreational therapy offers every day.
When we engage clients in recreation, we’re doing more than filling time with activities. We’re building bridges — helping people reconnect with themselves, others, and the world around them. Whether it’s sharing laughter over a group game, walking together in nature, or creating something beautiful, rec therapy helps people get “unstuck” in body, mind, and spirit.
🤝 Examples of Real Connection in Rec Therapy
Here are some simple but powerful ways recreational therapists help people reconnect in meaningful ways:
Nature Walks & Outdoor Adventures – Step outside and encourage conversation and mindfulness.
Group Art or Music Sessions – Self-expression builds trust and emotional safety.
Cooking or Baking Together – Shared tasks create natural conversation and cooperation.
Volunteer Projects – Giving back builds purpose and community pride.
Drum Circles or Dance Groups – Movement and rhythm promote belonging and joy.
Team-Building Games – Cooperation strengthens relationships and problem-solving.
Mindfulness & Relaxation Activities – Grounding exercises help people connect with the present moment.
Each of these experiences reminds us that healing happens in real time, with real people.
💛 Your Challenge: Keep It Real
Inspired by Flynn’s message, here’s a challenge for every recreational therapist reading this:
👉 Do one thing this month to connect — really connect.
That might mean:
Spending intentional time with your family or friends without screens.
Hosting a small gathering with colleagues or community members.
Attending a local event for rec therapists to share ideas face-to-face.
Or encouraging your clients to organize something that brings people together — a game night, art show, nature walk, or gratitude circle.
Remember, it doesn’t have to be perfect. It just has to be real.
🌟 The Heart of Our Profession
Recreational therapy thrives on authenticity — on laughter, eye contact, teamwork, and presence. As technology continues to evolve, let’s be the professionals who bring people back to what truly matters: connection, creativity, and community.
Here’s to keeping it real in a world that’s getting faker by the day.
