At Rec Therapy Today, recreational therapists see it every day:
Creative expression can help people focus, cope, communicate, and reconnect with themselves.
Artist Riana Nicole recently shared part of her story with us. She lives with ongoing mental health challenges and has experienced psychiatric hospitalization. Through it all, art has remained meaningful in her life.
“It’s been meaningful to me my whole life. I’ve always loved art.”
Riana creates oil pastel artwork and shares her work online. During difficult moments, creativity became more than just a hobby.
“It distracts me from everything and I am just focused on creating something.”
For many people, creative activities can provide:
- Emotional expression
- Stress reduction
- Focus and concentration
- Confidence and accomplishment
- Healthy coping
- A sense of identity and purpose
Riana also shared something many helping professionals understand deeply:
“It helped me express myself in ways I couldn’t do verbally.”
That insight matters.
Not everyone communicates emotions easily through conversation alone. Art, music, recreation, movement, writing, and other forms of self-expression can sometimes help people share feelings words cannot fully explain.
When asked what encouragement she would give others struggling with mental health challenges, Riana shared:
“It’s worth the fight even when it feels hopeless… because you matter and you’re important.”
