Many RTs report challenges engaging certain populations—especially teens, individuals with trauma histories, or clients who feel unmotivated.
Here’s how RTs can break through resistance.
1. Meet clients where they are
Use their preferred music, interests, art styles, movement, and communication methods.
2. Use motivational interviewing (MI)
Instead of telling clients what they “need to do,” invite them into the process:
“What would make today feel successful for you?”
3. Start with small wins
Success builds confidence and reduces defensiveness.
4. Offer structured choices
Choice increases buy-in and reduces oppositional behavior.
Your ability to engage difficult populations is one of the greatest strengths of our field.
