Empower Your Leadership with How to Lead When Your Boss Can’t or Won’t

by | Jan 6, 2024 | Book Summary 2024 | 0 comments

Title: How to Lead When Your Boss Can’t or Won’t
Author: John C. Maxwell
Year Published: 2005
Danny’s Rating: 5 stars

Why I Read This Book:

I read Maxwell’s book because I want to learn and grow my leadership skills in 2024. Several books on my 2024 reading list are focused on leadership.

In my role as the top leader at Rec Therapy Today, I am responsible for making the final decisions. My goal is to be a leader who inspires, motivates, and nurtures the development of the members of the Rec Therapy Today team as well as those who take our courses. I don’t want to be an ineffetive boss at my company.

Book Summary:

“How to Lead When Your Boss Can’t or Won’t” by John C. Maxwell is a guide for individuals who find themselves in positions of leadership without having the official title. Maxwell offers practical advice and strategies for leading from within an organization, despite the challenges presented by a boss who is unable or unwilling to lead effectively. The book covers topics such as taking initiative, building trust, fostering teamwork, and managing conflict, providing actionable insights for those looking to make a positive impact regardless of their formal authority. Maxwell’s emphasis on personal development and influence makes this book a valuable resource for anyone seeking to lead with influence and effectiveness.

I enjoyed the author’s choice of inspirational stories, quotes, and parables.

Lessons I want to remember from. Maxwell’s 2005 book:

Danny’s favorite lessons from the book include:

– Be dedicated to making a contribution
– Help realize the company’s vision
– Lead yourself before you can lead others
– Be able to manage your own emotions
– Leadership doesn’t stay the same, it’s about change and innovation
– Develop a positive attitude
– When working for others, complete all of your responsibilities and then ask the boss how you can help lighten their load
– Be prepared for when your day or opportunity comes
– Leadership is about learning, leaders find a better way
– Humorist Arnold Glasow said “The key to everything is patience. You get the chicken by hatching the egg, not smashing it.”

Develope storng character and morals.

Leadership isn’t  merely a position of authority. Leadership is about influence.
