Recreational therapists serve diverse clients—different ages, backgrounds, languages, and traditions. Cultural competence means recognizing, respecting, and responding to these differences in ways that make care meaningful.
How to Strengthen Cultural Competence:
-
Ask and Listen: Invite clients and families to share what recreation means to them.
-
Adapt Activities: A holiday craft may be joyful for one person but uncomfortable for another. Offer alternatives.
-
Learn Continuously: Read, attend workshops, and stay curious about cultural traditions.
-
Reflect on Bias: Be honest with yourself about assumptions, and practice humility when learning from clients.
When we embrace cultural competence, we not only respect our clients’ identities but also enrich the therapeutic experience for everyone.
