Messages From Peers Who Understand the Work
As part of our January giveaway, we asked recreational therapists one final open-ended question:
“Would you like to leave a short message of encouragement for another recreational therapist?”
(Responses were shared anonymously.)
What we received was something special—messages filled with hope, wisdom, validation, and heart. These words reflect the strength of the recreational therapy community and remind us why peer support matters, especially in a profession that gives so much to others.
“You Are Making a Difference”
Many messages focused on encouragement during hard days.
One therapist wrote:
“Keep going. You are making a difference, even if it is small.”
Another shared:
“Don’t give up. Some days are hard, some days are even harder. Look for the moments of ‘wow, I made a difference.’”
Recreational therapy isn’t always easy—but these messages remind us that progress isn’t always loud or immediate. Sometimes it shows up quietly, over time.
Proud to Be Recreational Therapists
Several responses emphasized pride in the profession and its unique role.
One powerful message stated:
“Recreational Therapists are a small but mighty group that recognizes the whole person. Your work is important, your impact is immeasurable, and you make a difference!”
Another shared:
“Yes, what we do is empower the whole person in the context of their environment—and that is what makes us unique.”
Recreational therapy stands out because it addresses the whole person—socially, emotionally, cognitively, physically, and spiritually—through meaningful leisure.
Wisdom From Experience
Some encouragement came from seasoned professionals who have witnessed the profession grow.
One therapist with decades of experience shared:
“Being in RT for over 45 years, I’ve seen great changes in the field and in myself. Keep improving yourself. It makes a difference for yourself and others.”
This reminder reinforces that growth—personal and professional—is a lifelong process in recreational therapy.
Advocacy, Documentation, and Collaboration
Encouragement also came with practical wisdom.
One message urged:
“Continue what you do, be open to new ideas, collaborate with your team—and document, document, document the outcomes and benefits of what we do.”
Another added:
“Keep advocating for yourself, because if you won’t, who will?”
Recreational therapy thrives when professionals speak up, document outcomes, and advocate for the value of their work.
Presence Matters More Than You Realize
Several messages highlighted the unseen impact of everyday moments.
One therapist wrote:
“You never know how your presence, patience, grace, and expertise may affect a client, a family member, or even a coworker.”
Another reminded peers to slow down:
“Just take one day at a time when you feel stressed out.”
Sometimes the most meaningful support isn’t a program—it’s presence.
Community SuppoRT Matters
These messages show that recreational therapists are not alone. There is a community that understands the challenges, celebrates the wins, and believes deeply in the value of this profession.
Recreational therapy is stronger when recreational therapists support one another.
During Recreational Therapy Month—and beyond—these words serve as a reminder:
You are valued.
Your work matters.
And what you do changes lives.
