After more than 25 years as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS), Catherine Bowers is preparing to begin a new chapter—one filled with family, books, hiking, and well-earned relaxation. As she reflects on her career, one thing is clear: therapeutic recreation was never just a job for Catherine. It was a calling.
Her journey into the profession began during an internship with Michelle Buccigrossi, whose mentorship left a lasting impression. Catherine credits Michelle with opening her eyes to the joy, compassion, and meaningful human connection that therapeutic recreation can bring into people’s lives.
Over the course of her career, Catherine served in a variety of settings, including long-term care, behavioral health, and programs supporting children with disabilities. Along the way, she created moments that clients and families will never forget.
She remembers teaching children with disabilities how to swim and witnessing their confidence grow in the water. She recalls adapting a cassette player for an individual with Parkinson’s disease so the person could independently enjoy music again—restoring not only entertainment, but autonomy and dignity. Another cherished memory involved hosting an English tea party, complete with authentic scones, for a woman longing to reconnect with a meaningful part of her heritage. These moments, Catherine says, reminded her that therapeutic recreation is often about much more than activities—it is about connection, identity, and quality of life.
As retirement approaches in just 30 days, Catherine hopes younger CTRS professionals will carry forward a spirit of curiosity and joy.
“Have fun and never stop learning,” she shared. “Every new skill or idea can create new opportunities for the people you serve.”
She also emphasized the importance of relationships, noting that the connections she formed with clients, families, and coworkers became the greatest treasures of her career.
Looking ahead, Catherine is excited for quieter days filled with reading, hiking, nature, and time with loved ones. After decades spent helping others experience fulfillment and recreation, she now looks forward to embracing those gifts herself.
To the next generation of CTRS professionals, Catherine offers one final piece of advice:
“Strive passionately for your dreams. Approach each day with an unyielding commitment to doing your absolute best. Your dedication has the power to change lives.”
At Rec Therapy Today, we thank Catherine for her decades of service, compassion, creativity, and advocacy for the therapeutic recreation profession. Her legacy will continue through the countless lives she has touched.
