Position: Recreation Therapist/Dance Movement Therapist
Salary: Negotiable based on experience
Duties: Northern Virginia Mental Health Institute is seeking someone to provide recreation therapy and psychosocial education rehab interventions that are responsive to the social, physical, emotional & cognitive recreational needs of our population. Responsibilities include providing well-coordinated and diverse recreational therapy programs which will enable the individuals we serve to function independently in the community. The successful candidate will have knowledge of the principles, techniques and methods of recreation therapy and of basic statistics and the different kinds of usage of recreation therapy materials and equipment. Have the ability to stimulate and sustain the individual’s recreation therapy interest as well as the ability to evaluate and report their progress. Ability to safely operate a state owned motor vehicle to transport individuals for community reintegration outings.
Interview process to include implementation of intervention by a mock group facilitation, demonstration of group development by creating a protocol.
The work hours are 8:00am to 4:45pm with some rotating evenings, and holidays required.
Minimum Qualifications
Valid driver’s license required.
Graduation from an accredited college or university with major studies in Recreation Therapy, Recreational Management, or related field or equivalent work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in psychiatric hospital as a paid Recreation Therapist or Internship placement strongly preferred.
Certification as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) by the National Council of Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) preferred.

Duties: Northern Virginia Mental Health Institute is seeking a Music Therapist to support the facility’s mission: actively promoting the recovery of individuals with serious mental illness. Knowledge of the principles, techniques and methods of music therapy and the recovery process are essential. The successful candidate will provide safe and effective music therapy programming in a supportive environment to encourage self-expression, enhance coping skills and foster the self-development of individuals. In addition to providing well-coordinated and diverse music therapy programs, responsibilities include completing Psychosocial Rehabilitation assessments, engaging in interdisciplinary treatment team meetings, completing music therapy consultative evaluations, and evaluating/documenting the progress of individuals. Additional duties will include, but are not limited to, participating in special events, departmental and hospital wide initiatives, and utilizing Recovery and TOVA techniques with the individuals we serve.
This position is primarily a Sunday through Thursday position 8:00 to 4:45.
Requirements: Work/Internship experience in music therapy under the supervision of a Board Certified Music Therapist.
Experience evaluating individuals for music therapy services, establishing treatment interventions and assessing the effective of those interventions.
Demonstrate proficiency playing guitar, playing piano/keyboard and singing.
