Assistant Professor of Therapeutic Recreation
University of Alaska Anchorage Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (HPER)
The Department of Health Physical Education and Recreation at the University of Alaska Anchorage invites applications for a term Recreation Therapy/Therapeutic Recreation faculty position at the Assistant Professor level. The position requires teaching, academic program and course development, and service. This nine-month contract can also include a summer component based on contracts with community agencies for the purposes of offering and developing summer programs.
The department is seeking a faculty member with an earned post-professional graduate and/or doctoral degree and is eligible for or holds certification as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS). The position will bring to the university expertise and substantial experience in therapeutic recreation with an emphasis on outdoor engagement and program planning in outdoor recreation.
Requirements: Candidates should have backgrounds in mental health, behavioral health, recreation therapy and/or therapeutic experience in working with members of vulnerable populations. This faculty member will contribute to the advancement of the Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and the development of recreation therapy to meet accreditation standards. The position will bring expertise in working with community agencies and will expand the department’s philosophy and mission of teaching, scholarship and service to the university, community, and profession. The appointment is responsible for internships and practica, which not only includes the supervision of practicum students, but also includes building collaborative partnerships with community-based organizations, agency supervisors. The position will coordinate credentialing.
The Department is developing a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology. The faculty position will lead the development of therapeutic recreation. Therapeutic Recreation will graduate students who have the preparation to pass the Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist exam sponsored by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification as identified in its academic path standards. The applicant will join a group of dynamic faculty with diverse teaching, program development, and service interests. HPER faculty engage in numerous interdisciplinary teaching, service and program development collaborations across the University of Alaska system. The HPER Department supports strong partnerships with many of the state’s health care and community agencies.
The department is the home of the UAA Human Performance Lab that offers students opportunities for practice, service learning, and civic engagement in the discipline of exercise science, health promotion, and rehabilitation. The University Medical (UMED) district of Anchorage, Alaska is adjacent to the university, and can provide unique opportunities for practice, student placement, program development, and collaboration.
