Recreational therapists typically work as employees.

Most rec therapists are hired to work as hospitals or other agencies.

Some of these recreational therapists develop an “employee mindset.”

Employees can benefit from having a “self-employed mindset.”

You don’t have to be self-employed to have a self-employed mindset!

Employed recreational therapists just like you can develop a self-employed mindset while working as an employee.

An Employee mindset:

  • I’m not in charge.
  • I have to go to work.
  • My bosses tell me what to do.
  • I don’t get to make any choices.
  • I just show up, do my work, and leave.
  • A person with this mindset might feel helpless.
  •  It isn’t the mindset that grows outstanding performance.

  • Pros of an employee mindset: I’m not in charge. I don’t have to do anything major.
  • Cons of the employee mindset: I’m not in charge of my life. I go with the flow and the flow goes down the drain.

A Self-employed mindset:

  • This person is an employee for an agency.
  • However, they have a different mindset about work.
  • The  employee views herself as self-employed individual.
  • They view themselves like an independently hired or contracted.
  • The employee is in charge of many things at their place of employment.

  • Cons of a self-employed mindset: I am going to have to start taking more responsibility.
  • Pros of a self-employed mindset: I’m responsible for me, my actions, my profession, and my outcomes! I am in charge! I take initiative to complete my responsibility without being asked to do it.

The Self-Employed Mindset is NOT:

  • Irresponsible
  • Passing the buck
  • Making blame and excuses
  • Going against a company’s policies and procedures to do your own thing.
  • It isn’t a childish way of thinking that this agency (the adults) aren’t going to tell me what to do.

The self-employed mindset believes:

  • I get to do this work.
  • I’m trusted to do this work.
  • I am 100% responsible for my work.
  • My work has my name signed to it
  • I know what my responsibilities are.
  • I do my work as if I am self-employed.
  • I independently fulfill my responsibilities.
  • My quality of work bares my name to it.
  • I don’t want to be an average, ordinary employee.
  • I represent myself and my profession (recreational therapy).
  • My self-employed mindset is that I do outstanding work to get outcomes.
  • I do my utmost, high-quality work so the agency will continue to hire me to work there.
  • I am committed to continually learning, growing, and improving my practice as an practitioner.
