The Target Effect:

Have you ever went to the store to buy one item and end up buying more than that one thing?

In example: I’m only going to pick up bread and milk, but I return with bread, milk, Coke, doughnuts, and a magazine. True story. This happens to a lot of people.

Target Effect is the term used to describe these shopping events, making a reference to people having a difficult time buying only one thing from Target retail stores.

Is there a Similar Book Effect at Libraries?

Does the same thing happen when you go to the library to rent one book and end up bringing back a stack of books?

In example: A woman might go to the library to rent a copy of the newly released (2019) book, Girl, Stop Apologizing: a Shame-free Plan for Embracing and Achieving Your Goals by Rachel Hollis.  The book is about enhancing self-esteem and self-actualization.

The Library of Congress Call Number used for helping people locate this book is:  158.1082 HOL. The 100s are for philosophy and psychology. Class 158 is for Applied Psychology.

While searching in 158, she discovered another (2019) book, Oprah Winfrey’s The Path made clear: discovering your life’s direction and purpose.

Oh wow! This is great. The woman rents both of these books.

That might be an example of the Target Effect at a Library.

Choose Your Environments Carefully – Consider visiting a library.

Stores are attractive and they invite us to come in to buy things. The Target Effect magically happens at… Target (as well as other stories). Many people overspend.

People with Alcohol use disorder are taught to stay away from bars. Bars allure people to have some fun by spending money on  drinks. A Seemingly Unimportant Decision (SUDs) is when a person with alcohol use disorder doesn’t really think about the high risk situation of entering a bar and how it is a slippery slope for relapsing.

Libraries provide us with the wisdom of the world.  Public Libraries invite us to come in, browse through books, rent a few books for free. You can take these books home and read them and then return them to the library and rent… more books for FREE.
