Are you working in the right profession?

We, humans spend a lot of our time at work.

Here is a scenario and a question to help you determine if you’re in the right profession.

Imagine today is the last day of your life. Would you be satisfied with what you’re doing with your life if this was your last day alive?

If your answer is yes on most days then you know you’re working in a profession that is meaningful for you.

If your answer is no for too many days in a row or for too long of a period, then you might want to seek out a new profession.

Highly creative and innovative people enjoy their work.

It’s difficult for a person to go the extra mile to produce outcomes when they don’t like what they’re doing.

How would the late Steve Jobs have answered?

The late, innovative Steve Jobs serves as a great example of being in harmony with his line of work.  He was passionate about his work creating Apple products and Pixar films. Jobs wasn’t about the money. There isn’t any good in being the richest person in the cemetery. He was about making a dent in this world.

How would Recreational Therapists answer?

Recreational therapists (in general) are fairly self-aware and find their career to be intrinsically rewarding.

National Council for Therapeutic Recreation (NCTRC)’s (2015) Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) Professional Profile Overview outlined satisfaction with current job.

CTRS reported:

  • 39% very satisfied
  • 42% satisfied

Nearly 80% (8 out of 10) are satisfied or very satisfied.

  • 7% were unsatisfied; and
  • 2% very unsatisfied.

While only 9% (almost 1 out of 10 people) were unsatisfied.

On Decisions

Our days are limited. We only have a little bit of time to make a dent in this world.

Only one person is responsible for your own happiness in life.

It is up to you.

It is okay okay to leave the Recreational Therapy profession if you’re not satisfied with your work.

Rec Therapists have moved on to become: Medical Doctors, U.S. Congressman, Entrepreneurs, Restaurant owners, and many other things.

And it is okay to be determined and passionate about growing and become the best recreational therapist you can be.
