The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse invites applications for a full-time, nine-month, tenure track Therapeutic Recreation position as Assistant Professor in the Department of Recreation Management and Therapeutic Recreation. Applicants need expertise to (a) teach introductory and upper division therapeutic recreation core courses (undergraduate and graduate), prefer interest and/or experience in teaching management functions, diagnostic groups, and physical disabilities in therapeutic recreation; (b) conduct scholarly activity such as research and grant writing activities, and advise undergraduate research and graduate projects and theses; and, (c) provide relevant professional and university service. Applicants need the ability to teach elective coursework related to one or more TR roles/settings.
Starting Date: August 26, 2019
Minimum Qualifications: Candidates for the appointment will need to have completed the doctorate degree in Therapeutic Recreation or related field and hold the credential of Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) by the start date. Degree must be earned by the first personnel review, no later than May 15, 2020.
Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated college teaching excellence in therapeutic recreation, evidence of scholarship with a focused research plan, and relevant professional experience. Preferred experience and/or interest in a strengths-based approach in Therapeutic Recreation, and a specialized area of study (e.g., gerontology, behavioral health, pediatrics, physical medicine and rehabilitation, residential or community-based services for persons with autism or intellectual disabilities, veterans services, inclusion, etc.). Preferred candidate will have experience and expertise in Management, Diagnostic groups, and Physical Disabilities in Therapeutic Recreation. In addition to supervising undergraduate and graduate internship students.
Background Information
The UW-L Therapeutic Recreation program is an independent major, housed within the Department of Recreation Management and Therapeutic Recreation in the College of Science and Health. The Program serves more than 300 undergraduate and master-level TR students, is accredited by COAPRT, and is among the top ten colleges producing certified therapeutic recreation specialists with an exceptional passing rate (100%) on the last national certification examination. Six collaborative and professionally involved faculty members deliver a curriculum with 13+ therapeutic recreation core and elective courses and a service-minded Therapeutic Recreation Club. Faculty have opportunities to mentor undergraduate and graduate grant-funded research projects and be involved with a wide range of community service activities.
