I was first introduced to the wonderful world and community of Down syndrome when my son was born ten years ago.
I could probably write a book or at least a chapter on the subject alone, but I won’t go into the whole story here.
We were young and first time parents. At times we felt completely overwhelmed. And sometimes we felt complete aw of this amazing little baby!
He was our first child. We did not have anything to compare our son to. This was honestly a blessing. Since then, we’ve added two more songs)
Everything is intensive. The challenges are more challenging. The victories are even sweeter.
When working with individuals with Down syndrome always presume competence. There will be some things out of my son’s reach. However, he will be able to accomplish the vast majority of things. He just moves and learn on his own time table.
The biggest hurdle to overcome is the perception of inability, differences, and disability by others. However, I fully intend for him to be independent, fall in love, work, get a higher education. All this is possible.
