How do you define career advancement?

Here are some questions that might guide you:
- Who do you want to work with?
- Where do you want to work at?
- What hours do you want to work?
- What is your dream career?
- What do you hope to be doing in the next year? Five years? Ten years?
- What do you need to do now in order to get to where you want to be?
It is vital that you know where you’re going.
Earl Nightingale defined success, in his article, The Strangest Secret in the World, as “the progressive realization of a worthy goal or ideal.” Nightingale gave three examples of this, including:
- The school teacher who is teaching because that’s what she wants to do;
- The entrepreneur who starts her own company because that was her dream and that’s what she wanted to do
- The salesperson who wants to become the best salesperson in her company and sets forth on the pursuit of this goal.
Thomas Merton illustrates this concept best with his quote: “People may spend their whole lives climbing the ladder of success only to find, once they reach the top, that the ladder is learning against the wrong wall.” Life is too short. You’ll want to make the best use of your time and go for what you really want in life.
I knew a mental health therapist who was simply a metal health therapist at heart.
