Why I Became a Recreational Therapist
I have always loved helping sick and weak individuals in my family. That passion carried into my professional life, where I became a college professor and consistently found myself supporting my weakest students.
As a recreational therapist, I now have the opportunity to help people recover from illness—whether physical or psychological. My desire to help others has always been the driving force behind my work, and recreational therapy allows me to turn that passion into meaningful, hands-on care.
Why Recreational Therapy Matters
Recreational therapy truly matters.
In my facility, I worked with a patient who had a learning disability and had never engaged in activities with any discipline. Each time I went to his unit to run groups, I greeted him, asked what he liked, and offered options such as arts and crafts, table games, or simple activities. At first, he did not want to interact—but I never gave up.
One day, he asked for blank paper and a black crayon. He began drawing pictures, and at the end of the group, he gave me five drawings he had created. From that day forward, I continued to offer him activities based on his interests.
Gradually, he became more vocal. His interactions with peers and staff increased, and his personality and behavior changed significantly. I shared feedback about his progress with the treatment team, and eventually, he was discharged to a transitional residence on our hospital campus.
That experience reinforced for me how powerful recreational therapy can be when we meet people with patience, persistence, and respect for their interests.
What People Often Don’t See About Recreational Therapy
One thing people outside the profession often don’t see is that recreational therapists recognize the importance of psychosocial support alongside other treatment modalities.
Recreation therapy helps enhance recovery by addressing emotional, social, and personal needs—not just symptoms. This holistic support is essential to meaningful and lasting progress.
